Mayar Janjal (Debris of Desire), a joint production of Bangladesh and India, will compete in the Asian Competition of the 20th edition of the Dhaka International Film Festival. It will be exhibited on January 22 at the Central Public Library. Popular Kolkata actor Ritwik Chakraborty and West Bengal Education Minister actor-director Bratya Basu will come to Dhaka to take part in it. Both have acted in the film.
Jasim Ahmed, the producer of ‘Mayar Janjal’ told, ‘Our film will have its Dhaka premiere at this festival. For this, Ritwik Chakraborty, Bratya Basu, and director Indranil Roychowdhury will come. Besides, our entire team including Opi Karim Sohail Rana will be there. I will stay. Hopefully, I will be able to make a new announcement after the screening at the Dhaka International Film Festival. I want to release the film in two Bengalis on the same day. ‘
The Dhaka International Film Festival will start on January 15 with 220 movies from 60 countries at the initiative of the Rainbow Film Parliament. In this year’s event, 21 films including ‘Mayar Janjal’ will compete in the main competition section of the festival. The festival will continue till January 23.
Mayar Janjal, featured in the official selection of the Asian New Talent Awards at the prestigious Shanghai International Film Festival in China in 2020, had its world premiere. The European premiere is at the Moscow International Film Festival. In the same year, the film was invited to the Asian Perspectives category at the 15th edition of the Jogja-Netpac Asian Film Festival in Jakarta, Indonesia. It also won the Best Feature Film Jury Award for being invited to the competition section ‘Encounter with Asian Cinema’ at the 21st edition of the Asiatica Film Festival in Rome, Italy.
15 years after the release of ‘Bachelor’ directed by Mostafa Sorayar Farooqi, Opi Karim worked for the big screen through ‘Mayar Janjal’. Her character’s name in the film is Soma. The girl is from Kolkata. She is married. Her family is with her husband and only child. However, the husband is unemployed. For this reason, Soma works at the house of veteran actor Paran Bandyopadhyay to teach her child in English medium. Her husband Chandu is played by Ritwik Chakraborty. Bratya Basu as Ganesh Babu, Chandreyi Ghosh as Beauty, and Sohail Rana as Satya. The film was shot in Dhaka and Kolkata.
Indranil Roychowdhury has written and directed the screenplay of ‘Mayar Janjal’ based on two short stories by Manik Bandyopadhyay. Jasim Ahmed’s co-producer is Kolkata Flipbook. Jasim Ahmed has gained fame at home and abroad by directing three short films. These are ‘stain’, ‘a pair of sandals’ and ‘chocolate’.
