A helicopter carrying India’s Chief of Defence Staff crashes

An Indian Air Force helicopter carrying Chief of Defence Staff Gen Vipin C Rawat and some other senior Defence officials today crashed at Coonoor in Nilgiris district of the southern state of Tamil Nadu, the Indian Air Force said.

“An IAF Mi-17V5 helicopter, with CDS Gen Bipin Rawat on board, met with an accident today near Coonoor, Tamil Nadu,” the IAF said in a Twitter post.

Four bodies have been recovered and three injured rescued from the crash site, PTI reports.

There is no official confirmation of the identity of the dead and the injured.

An Inquiry has been ordered to ascertain the cause of the accident, it said without specifying if there was any casualty, reports our New Delhi correspondent.

The chopper was on its way from an Indian Air Force base to the Defence Services College (DSC) at Wellington when it crashed at Nanjappanchathiram area amid heavy mist and early visuals showed the helicopter in flames.

Indian TV channels reported that the copter was mangled after falling on the ground.
