The main accused in the murder of Cumilla ward councillor Syed Mohammad Sohel and his aide were killed in a reported gunfight in the city with law enforcers early today.
Porimol Das, sub-inspector of Detective Branch of Police, Cumilla, confirmed the matter.
The deceased was identified as Shah Alam (28), the main accused in the Cumilla ward councillor murder case, he added.
A team of detectives and police officials conducted a drive in the Beribadh area near Gomoti river around 12:15 am based on a tip-off, according to Porimol.
“The accused started firing at the law enforcers sensing their presence forcing retaliation around 1:15 am,” the official claimed to add that once the firing stopped, police rescued Shah Alam from the spot.
“He was rushed to Cumilla Medical College Hospital where on-duty doctor declared him dead,” he also said.
Two police officials were also injured in the incident, the SI claimed.
A case was being filed in this connection.
