2 accused in Cumilla councilor murder case killed in ‘gunfight’ with police

Two accused of the murder of Cumilla ward councilor Syed Mohammad Sohel and his aide were killed in a reported gunfight in the city with law enforcers early today.

The deceased was identified as Md Sabbir Hossain, third accused, and Sajon, fifth accused in the case, reports our local correspondent quoting police.

Kamal Krishna Das, inspector (Investigation) of Cumilla’s Kotwali Police Station, said that several teams of Detective Branch and Kotwali Model Police Station conducted a raid in Shangraish and Nabagram areas around 12:15 am based on a tip-off.

“The accused started firing at the law enforcers as they reached Shangraish Beribadh area, forcing retaliation,” the police officer claimed to add that once the firing stopped, police recovered the bullet-hit bodies of Sabbir and Sajon from the spot.

Police also recovered guns and ammunition from the spot.

Three police officials sustained injuries in the incident and received treatment at the hospital, he added.

The bodies were kept at Cumilla Medical College for autopsy. A case was being filed with Cumilla Model Police Station in this connection.
