5 injured in pre-UP polls clash between rival candidates’ supporters in Munshiganj

Five people have been injured in clashes between supporters of the ruling party-backed candidate and his rival, ahead of the union Parishad election of Char Kewa in Munshiganj Sadar Upazila last night.

The clash took place between supporters of Afsar Uddin Bhuiyan, a candidate contesting with the boat symbol, and those of Akhtaruzzaman, a rebel candidate with pineapple symbol, in Khaskandi and Choto Mollakandi villages of the union from around 7 pm to 10:30 pm last night, reports our Munshiganj correspondent quoting Abu Bakkar Siddique, officer-in-charge of Munshiganj Sadar Police Station.
Shots were fired and cocktails were exploded during the clashes, he added.

The five injured were rushed to Munshiganj General Hospital. Three of them — Saiful Sardar (22), Sharif Bepari (32), and Babu Hawlader (22) — sustained bullet injuries and were sent to Dhaka for better treatment. The trio is a supporter of Afsar, the police official said.
